Sleep Hacking

I'm a morning person.  Today like most days, I got up at 6am.  My body just wakes up naturally.  I haven't used my alarm clock in months.

At the start of the year after I sold my first startup, I gave myself a little more freedom than I should have.  Waking up at noon, going to bed at 4am - all the while working on projects, but at the same time kidding myself into thinking that by living outside a normal sleeping pattern I was giving myself "time to really create, man".

In retrospect I achieved less than I do now, going to bed and waking up at times one would consider normal.

However, there is a difference between dragging yourself out of bed at 6am bleary eyed and incoherent, and being able to just stand up and walk out of bed at 6am and start working.  I owe the ability to do the latter to a Sleep Hack, and here it is:

Don't close your curtains.

Or blinds, if you have those.

I simply leave my blinds open at all times.  I wake up when the sun comes up.  No need for a shrieking alarm clock to lurch me from my bed.  Consequently, by the time midnight rolls around, I'm ready to go to bed.  But that's ok with me, I'm a morning person.

If I'm awake at 6am about all I'm capable of is respiration. And that's the annoying thing, even with blinds closed, curtains drawn and a duvet over my head my brain still insists on waking me up no matter what time I get to bed. Recently I seem to spend my days like an extra from Shaun of the Dead.

If I need a hack, it's how to get to sleep in the first place that doesn't involve copious amounts of alcohol poured liberally into my head.

Kudos for maximising your awake time.

I'm in full agreement. I've just moved into a new house with large windows which are lacking blinds. Although not quite a 6am riser the sun certainly helps getting up earlier. Very few bleary eyed mornings off at the gym have been had since making the change.

The question is though, does it follow the whole year round? During the winter months when it is darker in the mornings does it affect the waking time (or the will to get out of bed in a friggin cold house)

I have a problem: I can't get productive sleeping less than 9 hours per day. I think the time has come to I make some changes about this (un)conscious lazyness! Some years ago I've learned the Sleep Hack technique (not with this name, though) but I'll try it again thisverynight! Will it work? Will the sun shine on me? lol

How about weekends? I wake up early during the week for work and school, but Friday often ends up being a 24hr day and then I wake up some time between 12:00 and 14:00 on Saturday. Do you try to keep your schedule on weekends?

I love your apartment, btw. The contrast of the wood and the bare concrete is just beautiful. I'd just love to get out of this crappy old building out in いなか and move into something more modern.

Willster > As I said in my diet tips, I try not to eat later than 5 ~ 6pm. I wonder if that has something to do with it - by the time it's bedtime I'm all tuckered out and my body isn't buzzing from a recent food intake?

Hunter > Not sure, will update when the mornings are darker :)

cesarkohl > I'm the opposite! If I stay in bed for more than 8 hours I feel drowsy for the whole day...

yagmot > I stick to the same schedule at the weekends, more or less. I really like being able to get stuff done on Saturday morning and then heading out at 11am to start the "real" Saturday stuff (shops, cafe, lunch etc).

I really rather prefer a good old *POKE in the mornings.

Jon, weren't you sentenced to many years in the UK - where the sun can rise at anything from 1am to 1pm ?

Ditching the alarm clock is the 1st step to enlightenment.

It's a pretty good idea to keep you up early in the morning and I also like to keep my curtains open for the sun to come in during the day.. but the only problem is I really dont like my neighbours to watch me sleep - guess its a common issue of this Sleep Hack for us who live in the lower level of the apartment buildings.

actually there's an office block across from me who I'm pretty sure can full-on see me walking around in the morning naked / in my pajamas but I guess it's not so much of an issue for boys. the more people who see us naked the better.

There's an alarm clock company that have cottoned on to this hack:

I was given the Lumie 100 as a gift, it works really well, starting to light up 30 minutes or so before the alarm time. By the time the alarm sounds I'm generally already 75% awake. Prefer to keep our curtains closed as it shuts out central London noise, as well as prying eyes from across the street.

I exercise a lot, or more to the point, run a lot, hence I need fewer hours of sleep for recovery nowadays, and those who say it's bit abnormal sleeping a mere 6 hours must get fit. Maybe it's old age, but I enjoy getting up early and feel far more productive, personally it's less waste of a day for me. TV is more often than not, crap, so not much else to do past midnight anyway. My clubbing days are over. More importantly, anymore stainless steel finishes in that department, and you're close to getting the prison cell look.

Good idea. If you live somewhere where your neighbours cannot see directly into your apartment and you sleeping. Creeps me out.
Oh also, don't drink coffee after 16:00.

I wish I can do that! Standing up at 6am everyday. I'm a night person. Productivity works best at night. If only all my clients work at night too! Ha!

Got to turn my clock for past 20 years around. Learning to become a morning person is tough.

I used to be a night person in my past (pre-two-babies) life.

Now I wake up when my kids decide to wake me (about 5-6 am) or when the sun wake me through no-blind window when I fall asleep on my sofa.

I tried not to close window blinds in our bedroom but unfortunately we live in front of a street lamp. :D

I'd like to do this too, but like Federico, we live near street lamps! Something for our next house requirements...

I would follow your advice, unless I was situated in Sweden.. where the sun currently rises at noon and is only up for an hour or so..
