Interested in Polls & Surveys?

Full disclosure.  I'm building a poll & survey app.

Take this poll if you're interested!

Thanks :)

I've been eye-balling this for a short while now and I really dig the idea of having a simple survey app. I'd like to know how you plan on setting this service apart from all the others that are out there.

I really dig those little mascots you make for your services too. ;)

Hoping you have as much success with this endeavor as you have with Peashoot and OSFood! Good luck and keep us posted!

How does one young jedi get access to this super closed beta? :)

Wilhelm > thanks. I think there are a few areas where it's possible to differentiate in this segment. The main one is overall design - not just of the polls and surveys that get created, but of the app itself. I want to create something that is simple, quick and attractive to use for all the people who have to interact with it (creator and responders). There's lots of survey software out there but so much of it seems dated. The biggest one - surveymonkey - in particular doesn't do a great job in terms of UI and the surveys that it creates are scarily unattractive...

That said I'm not really aiming to compete with anyone in particular. I just want to make a great poll & survey app, one that I'll use myself.

Chris > "Super Closed" is another way of saying that I'm just testing by myself right now. Still too early to open up to other beta testers just yet :)

looks as always very promising, but what happened to egg&co? you changed the name curios forest?? you seem to change your mind quickly ;-) it is funny because right now i am in the process of starting a new business (startup) and trying to force myself not to change my mind all the time, concernig names an looks. it is one thing to have a good product, but to have a strong brand is very helpful, as well. hopefully i will be focusing on building a brand soon. greetings from germany and good luck with your projects.

I'm not making a huge deal out of it, but the point of changing was focus.

"Egg Co" was just an umbrella for a bunch of projects I was incubating - Open Source Food, Sweetcron, Peashoot.  They all did wildly different things with no clear common thread.

The focus from this point onwards is SaaS.  That's what I do.  I develop software that customers pay for.  Peashoot and Seashell are my products and I think they deserve a name all for themselves :)

It looks quite nice but what will separate this from other poll services that offer their products for free?

there will always be free options for any web-based software.  we shouldn't be afraid of making paid software just because there is a free competitor.  usually with free services you have to make some sort of compromise:

- dated and ugly
- 3rd party branding on your polls
- no support

etc etc.

and the people who are comfortable with those compromises are not the market I'm aiming for.  37signals does just fine despite the fact there are a ton of free product management tools out there.  they (like me) recognise there is value in providing a better all-round service that a segment of the overall market is more than happy to pay for.

Tried out the app from some sample questions you've shared. it looks like a real nice and simple solution. Maybe we'll see some Posterous influence on the app as well? I don't even know what that means, but I'm sure your app will be more popular if you say it does :)

Seriously though, I'm guessing there will be some integration between Seashell and Peashoot? Some nice and useful data on the backend?

The asus netbook you bought and linked to in your article is called SeaShell as well as your new app, interesting (?!) ;-)

@JeromeSadou

Nice catch! Those Asus Seashell notebooks certainly could have been an inspiration. Or it could have been a moment of "oh crap I need a name for this new project!" [yongfook looks around his desk]...

What if I told you that this is exactly the kind of thing I've been looking for. Can you please tell me when you'll be allowing a [open] private beta? I'm excited and looking forward to this.

Do you have an email sign-up for more info on Seashell? Or is it an old fashioned keep checking back ;-)
