Haagen Dazs Salted Caramel

I'm a huge advocate of salty-sweet. Whether we realise it or not, opposing flavour forces appear in things we enjoy eating all the time. Good chefs balance flavours such as sweet and sour, rich and acidic, salty and sweet to make food more interesting on the palate. Think dark chocolate cake (rich) studded with cherries (acidic). Flavour balance can make the difference between something that is boring to eat and something that causes you to helplessly stuff more of into your gaping mouth.

Salted Caramel is one of the latter combinations. A refined, balanced combination of sweet and salty that's embarrassingly more-ish...

Tippling Club

That's why I was very happy to be invited by Haagen Dazs to try out their new Salted Caramel flavour in a suitably refined way - via a cocktail tasting! 3 of Singapore's best cocktail bars are participating in the launch of the new flavour and have created an original cocktail with it. I went down to Tippling Club to try theirs.

Tippling Club's cocktail is a riff on an old cocktail from the 1800s called a Tom & Jerry. Theirs is called the Salted Caramel Tom & Jerry and has rum, espresso and of course Haagen Dazs Salted Caramel ice cream.

On the left is a quenelle of the ice cream, on the right are two beakers - one of rum (quite a lot!) and one of espresso. You simply mix and drink - I imagine if you don't want to add all the rum you can add to your taste, then give the rum to one of your more thirsty table partners i.e. me.

You end up with Singapore's sexiest affogato. I love the flavour of salted caramel anyway and adding alcohol and coffee to it - a stroke of genius!

I stuck around for a while and chatted to the folks at Tippling Club who said the ice cream is delightfully soft (making it great for use in drinks) - among the softest ice cream they've ever used. I also ordered another drink to try what else they had, something acidic this time (remember folks, balancing flavours is good!). Here's what they came up with:

Van Gogh

The Van Gogh, with grapefruit elixir. Rounded off the night nicely.

Haagen-Dazs Salted Caramel is available for a limited time - I found mine at Cold Storage but I'm sure most supermarkets will be carrying it.

There are 3 cocktail bars in Singapore participating in the launch of this new flavour, by creating their own signature cocktails with it.
